Where to spot
Coastal mangrove forests, nipa palm swamps, and tidal mudflats across Southeast Asia, from India and Bangladesh to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, distinct 'whip-whip' or 'guwa-guwa' call. Look along the edges of mangrove channels or on exposed mud, often hopping quickly. Patience and stealth are important.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Best observed at low tide when mudflats are exposed and birds are actively foraging. Active during dawn and dusk. More vocal during the breeding season.

Unlike most pittas that prefer dense inland forests, the Mangrove Pitta is specialized to estuarine habitats, foraging for crabs and other invertebrates in muddy substrates.
