Spotted
A small antpitta easily identified by its rusty-colored breast and a fine white eye-ring. It is a widespread but secretive resident of humid montane and foothill forests.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane and foothill forests across the Andes, from northern Venezuela and Colombia south through Ecuador and Peru, to northern Bolivia.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often rapid, whistled calls. Patience is essential, as it typically remains concealed in dense undergrowth, hopping quietly on the forest floor or low branches.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round in its range.
Its 'rusty' chest coloration is a consistent field mark, helping birders distinguish it from similar small antpittas.
