Spotted
The Rufous Scrub-bird is a small, shy, and highly elusive ground-dwelling bird endemic to the rainforests of eastern Australia. It is known for its powerful voice and skulking habits.
Where to spot
Endemic to a limited range in the humid montane rainforests of southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales, Australia. It prefers dense undergrowth and gully bottoms.
How to spot
This bird is extremely difficult to see due to its dense habitat and shy nature. Identification relies almost entirely on its distinctive, explosive, and often mimetic calls. Remain still and listen carefully in suitable habitat.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (winter to early spring in Australia, roughly June to October), especially at dawn and dusk.
Despite its small size and secretive nature, the Rufous Scrub-bird has an extraordinarily loud and far-carrying voice, often described as a 'whip-crack' call.
