Spotted
The Noisy Scrub-bird is an extremely rare and critically endangered ground-dwelling bird endemic to a small region of Western Australia. It is celebrated for its remarkably loud and varied calls.
Where to spot
Endemic to a very restricted coastal heath and dense scrubland habitat in southwestern Western Australia, primarily around Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve.
How to spot
This bird is exceptionally secretive and terrestrial, making visual observation very rare. Identification is almost exclusively by its incredibly loud, resonant, and far-carrying calls, which often sound like a whip-crack followed by a series of explosive notes.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (austral winter, June to October), particularly at dawn and dusk.

Once thought extinct, the Noisy Scrub-bird was dramatically rediscovered in 1961 and has been the focus of intense conservation efforts to save it from oblivion.
