Spotted
The Rufous-crowned Emu-wren is a small, elusive bird characterized by its striking rufous cap and long, emu-like tail. It is an inhabitant of spinifex grasslands in arid regions.
Where to spot
Arid and semi-arid spinifex grasslands and shrublands in inland Western Australia and parts of the Northern Territory.
How to spot
Scan dense spinifex for rapid, low-to-the-ground movements. Listening for their soft, high-pitched calls can also help locate these tiny, hard-to-spot birds.
When to spot
Best observed in the cooler parts of the day, especially early morning, when they are actively foraging.

Like other emu-wrens, its unique tail feathers are prone to damage but play a role in balance as it navigates dense spinifex.
