Spotted
The Rufous-vented Piculet is a minute woodpecker, primarily olive-green with a distinctive rufous (reddish-brown) patch on its vent (under-tail coverts). It is an active bird, often seen hopping along thin branches and vines in search of insects. Its small size makes it easily overlooked.
Where to spot
Found in humid tropical lowland forests, forest edges, and gallery forests across the Amazon Basin, including parts of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
How to spot
Look for its tiny size and quick movements on thin branches and vines. Pay attention to the rufous vent as it hops. Listen for its high-pitched, rapid 'tsee-tsee-tsee' calls or soft, rapid drumming. Binoculars are essential for a good view.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most active during the early morning hours. Vocal activity may increase during the breeding season.

The rufous vent is a key distinguishing feature, especially when the bird briefly raises its tail while foraging, helping to differentiate it from other piculet species.
