Where to spot
Found exclusively on the Iberian Peninsula, including Spain and Portugal. Inhabits broadleaf forests, olive groves, open woodlands, and even parks and gardens.
How to spot
Look for its overall green plumage with a red crown and the distinct black 'mustache' stripe. Listen for its characteristic loud, laughing calls, which are a key identifier.
When to spot
Active throughout daylight hours and observable year-round. It is often more vocal and conspicuous during the breeding season in spring.

This species has a particularly long, sticky tongue, enabling it to extract ants and their larvae from deep within their nests, forming a large part of its diet.
