Where to spot
Found across Southeast Asia, including the Indian subcontinent, Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, and parts of Indonesia. Inhabits primary evergreen and deciduous forests.
How to spot
Look for its large size, dark back contrasting with a white belly, and a prominent red crest (male). Listen for its loud, resonant calls and powerful, far-carrying drumming.
When to spot
Active throughout daylight hours and can be observed year-round in its resident range. Mornings are often the most productive for sightings and vocalizations.
