Spotted
The Rufous-bellied Chachalaca is a striking game bird found in northwestern Mexico, easily identified by its contrasting rufous underparts. It typically inhabits arid and semi-arid deciduous forests and scrub.
Where to spot
This species is found along the Pacific slope of northwestern Mexico, from Sonora south to Nayarit. Search for it in tropical deciduous forests, arid scrublands, and thorny woodlands.
How to spot
Locate them by their noisy, raucous calls, which are a series of cackles and hoots. They often move in small groups, so if you spot one, others are likely nearby. Look for them foraging in trees or walking stealthily on the forest floor.
