Spotted
The Rufescent Scops Owl is a small, rufous-colored owl of Southeast Asian rainforests. It is known for its excellent camouflage and secretive nature, making it hard to detect.
Where to spot
Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and Java. Inhabits dense lowland and submontane rainforests.
How to spot
Primarily detected by its soft, low hooting call, often a single 'hoo.' Look for its rufous plumage and listen carefully in dense forest undergrowth. Spotlighting at night is essential, focusing on mid-story and canopy.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Most active and vocal in the hours after dusk.
This owl has distinctive yellow eyes and ear tufts that are often difficult to see, blending seamlessly with its streaky rufous plumage that mimics dead leaves or tree bark.
