The Cebu Scops Owl is a small, extremely rare owl endemic to Cebu Island in the Philippines. It is considered critically endangered due to extensive habitat destruction.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Cebu, Philippines, primarily in remaining patches of lowland and montane forest.
How to spot
Extremely challenging to observe. Primarily identified by its distinctive vocalizations, often a series of 'wut-wut-wut' notes. Requires dedicated nocturnal fieldwork in its highly restricted forest patches.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Observations are exceptionally rare.
This owl was once thought to be extinct due to massive deforestation on Cebu, but its rediscovery brought hope and highlighted the importance of remnant forest patches for its survival.
