Spotted
The Cloud-forest Screech Owl is a small, relatively recently described owl species found in the humid montane forests of the central Andes. It is known for its high-pitched call.
Where to spot
Humid montane cloud forests in Peru and Bolivia, typically at moderate to high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its high-pitched, whistled calls, which are quite distinct. Due to its cryptic nature and dense habitat, it's often much easier to hear than to see visually.
When to spot
Nocturnal. Most active and vocal during the breeding season at night. Its calls are often the best way to detect its presence.
This species was only formally described in 1999, highlighting the ongoing discovery of new bird species in highly biodiverse and often remote regions like the Andes.
