Spotted
Rockefeller's Sunbird is a rare and highly localized montane species, with males showing a combination of iridescent green and blue, a red breast band, and a distinctive yellow belly. It is endemic to a few mountain ranges.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high-altitude montane forests of the Itombwe and Marungu Mountains in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and possibly adjacent areas.
How to spot
Dedicated expeditions to its specific high-altitude forest habitat are required. Look for its unique color pattern, especially the yellow belly, and listen for its calls in the forest canopy.
When to spot
Year-round resident, but observations are extremely difficult due to its restricted range and the inaccessibility of its habitat. Morning activity is typical.
This species is named after the American philanthropist and conservationist John D. Rockefeller Jr., reflecting the historical importance of collecting and describing new species from remote regions.
