A distinctive sunbird found in fragmented mountain forests, male Uluguru Violet-backed Sunbirds have brilliant iridescent violet-blue upperparts and a yellow belly. Females are duller. It is an active nectar-feeder.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Uluguru Mountains and Usambara Mountains in Tanzania, inhabiting moist montane forests.
How to spot
Requires dedicated searching in its specific montane forest habitat. Look for it visiting flowering trees and shrubs in the mid-story. Its striking colors in good light are diagnostic.
When to spot
Active year-round, with peak foraging in the morning and late afternoon.
The Uluguru Violet-backed Sunbird is an Albertine Rift endemic, highlighting the high levels of endemism in these isolated East African mountain ranges.
