Spotted
The Grey-winged Spiderhunter is a large, drab species, mostly olive-green with distinctive grey wings, and a long, decurved bill. It is typically found in primary and secondary forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of New Guinea, inhabiting lowland and montane forests and forest edges.
How to spot
Requires patient searching due to its camouflaged plumage. Focus on its long bill and the greyish cast to its wings. Listen for its distinctive loud calls in the forest.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during morning and late afternoon when foraging activity is high. Look for it around flowering plants and spiders' webs.
The subtle grey on its wings is a critical field mark that distinguishes it from other similar-looking spiderhunters in its range, often only noticeable in good light.
