A medium-sized, elegant gull with a relatively small bill and a "gentle" appearance, giving rise to its North American common name, Mew Gull. It's a widespread coastal and inland species.
Where to spot
Widespread across northern Eurasia and North America. Breeds on coasts and islands, also inland near freshwater. Winters along coasts, large lakes, and agricultural fields further south.
How to spot
Identify by its medium size, relatively small, unpatterned yellow-green bill, and generally pale grey upperparts. Look for distinct white spots (mirrors) on the black wingtips. Its call is typically higher-pitched and more "mewing" than other large gulls.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in many parts of its range, with peak numbers in winter along coastal areas. Breeding occurs from spring to early summer.
