Spotted by
A common and widespread pelagic gull named for its distinctive 'kitti-wake' call and, in adults, its dark legs. It spends most of its life at sea, only coming to land to breed on cliffs.
Where to spot
Breeds colonially on coastal cliffs in the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Spends the non-breeding season far out at sea across these oceans.
How to spot
Look for its relatively small size for a gull, all-white body, grey back, and black wingtips that appear 'dipped in ink' without any white spots. Adults have black legs. Listen for its characteristic 'kitti-wake' call.
When to spot
Breeding season from April to August, when they are found on coastal cliffs. Pelagic observation is possible year-round, especially autumn/winter in offshore waters.

Black-legged Kittiwakes are unusual among gulls for nesting exclusively on narrow cliff ledges, building sturdy nests to prevent eggs and chicks from falling into the sea.
