How to spot
Look for them feeding on birch or alder catkins. They are often found in flocks and can be quite acrobatic while feeding. Listen for their distinctive 'chup-chup-chup' call.
When to spot
Best observed during winter in temperate regions, when they descend from their northern breeding grounds. In summer, found in northern forests and tundra.
