Found in mountainous regions of the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, China, and Vietnam. It inhabits montane forests, often near bamboo and rhododendrons.

Scan dense forest undergrowth and canopy. Look for their characteristic stout bill. Listen for their soft, piping calls, which are often the best way to locate them.

Visible year-round in its resident range. More active during the breeding season (spring/summer), but generally a shy and elusive bird.
