Johnston's Sunbird is a spectacular montane species, with males boasting a brilliant array of iridescent red, purple, and green. It is closely associated with high-altitude ericaceous heath and giant heathers.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high-altitude mountains of East and Central Africa, including Mount Kenya, Mount Elgon, and the Rwenzori Mountains, typically in heathland and open forest.
How to spot
Look for it among the giant heathers and other flowering plants in alpine and subalpine zones. Its bright colors are visible even at a distance. Listen for its high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Observable throughout the year in its specialized montane habitat. Best times are often during the flowering seasons of its preferred plants, typically in the morning.
