The Red-tailed Hawk is one of the most widespread and recognizable raptors in North America, known for its distinctive reddish-brown tail in adults. It is a powerful and versatile hunter.
Where to spot
Widely distributed across North America, from Alaska and Canada south through Mexico and Central America to the Caribbean. Found in diverse open habitats with scattered trees.
How to spot
Look for the signature brick-red tail of the adult (immature birds have banded tails). When soaring, look for a dark bar on the leading edge of its underwing. Listen for its classic 'kee-aaaaar' scream.
When to spot
Year-round resident in most of its range, migratory in northern areas. Active throughout the day, often seen perched on high vantage points.
