Spotted
A medium-sized tropical tern, the Bridled Tern is recognized by its distinctive dark 'bridle' pattern on its face and a black cap. They are highly pelagic, spending most of their lives over open oceans.
Where to spot
Inhabits tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide, including the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. They nest on remote islands and rocky coastlines.
How to spot
Look for its dark grey upperparts, white underparts, and the distinctive white 'bridle' stripe that extends above and behind the eye, separating the dark cap from the dark eye line. Best observed from boats far offshore or near nesting islands.
When to spot
Primarily observable during their breeding season, which varies by region but often occurs from late spring to autumn, when they come ashore to nest. Otherwise, they are difficult to spot from land.
