The Red-eyed Dove is a large and common dove widespread across Sub-Saharan Africa. It is easily identifiable by its prominent red eyes and a distinct black neck collar.
Where to spot
Commonly found in woodlands, forests, savannas, cultivated areas, and urban gardens throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Often perches conspicuously on trees or telephone wires.
How to spot
Look for its relatively large size among doves, greyish plumage, black half-collar, and especially its striking red eyes. Its unique and easily recognizable call is often the first indication of its presence.
When to spot
A year-round resident across its distribution. Active during the day, particularly noticeable in the early morning and late afternoon when calling and foraging.
