Spotted
The Lemon Dove is a shy, ground-dwelling pigeon found in dense forests across sub-Saharan Africa. Its distinctive lemon-yellow underparts and dark back make it a striking, if often elusive, forest inhabitant.
Where to spot
Found in montane and evergreen forests across sub-Saharan Africa, from West Africa to East Africa and down to South Africa.
How to spot
Look for it foraging quietly on the forest floor, often near dense undergrowth. Listen for its soft, deep cooing call, which can help pinpoint its location in thick vegetation. Its distinct yellow belly is a key identifier.
When to spot
Year-round, but can be more active and vocal during breeding season. Best observed in early mornings or late afternoons.
Unlike many pigeons that forage in open areas, the Lemon Dove primarily feeds on fallen fruits, seeds, and small invertebrates directly on the forest floor.
