Spotted
The Nicobar Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula nicobarica) is a species of imperial-pigeon endemic to the Nicobar Islands. It is a large, dark pigeon with a distinctive white head and neck, contrasting sharply with its otherwise somber plumage.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal, India. Primarily inhabits lowland evergreen forests, including coastal and mangrove areas.
How to spot
Focus on the canopy of fruiting trees. The striking white head and neck should help identify it amidst the foliage. Listen for its deep, resonant call, characteristic of imperial-pigeons.
When to spot
Observable year-round. As with most imperial-pigeons, early morning and late afternoon are optimal times for observing feeding activity. Look for them during periods of abundant fruit.
This species plays a crucial ecological role in its island ecosystem, primarily as a disperser of large seeds, contributing to the health and propagation of local forest flora.
