The African Olive Pigeon is a large, robust pigeon found in forested areas across much of Sub-Saharan Africa. It is named for its preference for olive fruits and its overall olive-brown plumage.
Where to spot
Widespread in Sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting montane forests, woodlands, plantations, and dense thickets, often at higher altitudes.
How to spot
Look for a large, dark pigeon with an olive-brown body, a checkered back, and bright yellow legs and beak. Often seen feeding on fruit in trees or flying rapidly between forest patches. Its call is a deep, resonant cooing.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. Often more active and vocal in the early morning and late afternoon.
