The Rajah Scops Owl is a small, rufous-brown owl found on Sumatra and Borneo, inhabiting montane forests. It is known for its secretive nature and beautiful plumage.
Where to spot
Sumatra and Borneo (Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei). Primarily found in montane forests, typically above 900 meters.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive series of short, repeated hoots. Look for its rufous plumage with fine barring and small ear tufts. Requires nocturnal spotlighting in montane forest.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Most vocal after dusk.
This owl is named after Sir James Brooke, the first Rajah of Sarawak, reflecting the region where it was first discovered. Its calls can be surprisingly loud for its size.
