Spotted
The Eurasian Eagle-Owl is one of the world's largest and most powerful owls, with striking orange eyes and prominent ear tufts. It is a formidable nocturnal predator of diverse habitats.
Where to spot
Rocky outcrops, cliffs, dense forests, and remote wild areas across Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa. Adaptable to various habitats if prey is abundant.
How to spot
Listen for its very deep, resonant 'oo-hoo' or 'ooo-hu-ooo' call echoing through valleys at night. Finding one visually is challenging; look for large, imposing silhouettes on cliff ledges or large trees during dusk or dawn.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Best detected by its deep, resonant hooting call after dark, especially during the breeding season (late winter to spring). Visual sightings are rare and difficult.
