Spotted
A distinctive antpitta with a pale bill and a rather plain, brownish plumage. It inhabits humid montane forests where it forages secretively on the forest floor.
Where to spot
Found in the humid montane forests of the eastern slopes of the Andes, from northern Ecuador south through central Peru. It prefers the understory of dense cloud forests.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic vocalizations – often a series of deep hoots. Observing it requires quiet persistence in appropriate forested habitats, as it tends to stay hidden amidst dense leaf litter and vegetation.
When to spot
Best sought during the early morning and late afternoon when it is most vocal and active. It can be observed throughout the year within its range.
