A striking antpitta with a distinctive chestnut nape, found in humid montane forests of the Andes. Its secretive nature makes it more often heard than seen.
Where to spot
Humid montane cloud forests of the Andes, from northern Colombia through Ecuador to northern Peru. Typically found at elevations between 2,000 and 3,500 meters.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, far-carrying call from dense undergrowth. Requires extreme patience and often a good local guide to spot it foraging on the forest floor, usually staying hidden in thick vegetation.
When to spot
Most active and vocal at dawn and dusk. Observation is possible throughout the year within its range.
