Spotted
A small, dark tapaculo with a restricted range in the high Andes of Peru and Bolivia. It is a secretive ground-dweller of humid montane cloud forests.
Where to spot
Found in the humid montane cloud forests and paramo edge of the Andes, from central Peru south into western Bolivia. Typically at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often rattling or churring calls. It is extremely shy and difficult to see; focus on detecting it by sound and then waiting patiently near the source in dense cover.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round in its range.

Its common name 'Neblina' refers to the cloud forests (neblina means 'mist' or 'fog' in Spanish) it inhabits, often shrouded in perpetual mist.
