A small tapaculo with a restricted range in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. It is a shy inhabitant of dense undergrowth and humid forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid montane forests and dense undergrowth of southeastern Brazil, particularly in the Planalto region of São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina states.
How to spot
Listen for its distinct vocalizations. It is extremely shy and difficult to see; focus on detecting it by sound and then waiting patiently near the source in dense cover.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round in its specific forest habitat.

This species was only described in 2005, part of the ongoing taxonomic discoveries within the highly diverse and cryptic genus Scytalopus in Brazil.
