Spotted
The Alto Marañón Tapaculo is a small, secretive passerine bird endemic to certain high-altitude regions. Like other tapaculos, it is more often heard than seen, navigating dense undergrowth with agility.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane forests and cloud forests in specific areas of the Andes, particularly in northern Peru.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often rapid and repetitive, vocalizations. Patiently watch the lower undergrowth and dense tangles near streams or ravines; binoculars are essential for glimpsing this shy bird.
When to spot
Active throughout the year, primarily during early morning and late afternoon.
This species was only formally described in 2011, highlighting how new bird species can still be discovered in remote and challenging terrains.
