Spotted
The Puna Plover is a small, high-altitude shorebird found in the Andes of South America. It is characterized by its plain brown upperparts and distinct head pattern.
Where to spot
High Andean plateaus and puna grasslands, typically above 3,500 meters, in Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
How to spot
Focus on high-altitude wetlands and wet grasslands. Its relatively plain plumage means paying attention to its overall shape and subtle head markings. Use a spotting scope for distant views.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its highland range. Most active during daylight hours, foraging along the edges of high-altitude wetlands.
This plover is specially adapted to the harsh conditions of the high puna grasslands, often found near bogs and lakes that are fed by melting glaciers.
