The Puerto Rican Tanager is a medium-sized, drab-colored bird endemic to Puerto Rico, characterized by its olive-brown plumage and a conspicuous white speculum (wing patch). It is a resident of wet mountain forests.

Endemic to the island of Puerto Rico. It inhabits humid montane forests, particularly in elfin forest, cloud forests, and coffee plantations, typically at higher elevations.
How to spot
Look for its olive-brown plumage, dull yellow underparts, and especially the distinct white patch on its wing, which is often visible when perched. Listen for its rather harsh, scratchy calls and simple, repetitive song.
When to spot
Resident year-round on Puerto Rico. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon, often seen foraging in the middle to upper canopy.

Despite its common name, genetic studies have shown this species is not a true tanager but rather represents a unique lineage within the Passeroidea superfamily, now placed in its own family, Nesospingidae.
