The Dark Batis is a small, relatively plain batis species, with a less contrasting plumage than many of its relatives. It has dark upperparts, a black mask, and a somewhat muted rufous or greyish breast band.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high-altitude montane forests of southern Tanzania and northern Malawi.
How to spot
Look for them in the mid to upper canopy of montane forests. Identify by its darker overall appearance and black mask. Listen for its characteristic high-pitched 'chip' or 'dzit' calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its restricted montane habitat. Active throughout the day.

This species is often found in the sub-canopy and mid-story of dense forests, where its less striking plumage provides better camouflage against predators.
