The Rwenzori Batis is a small and distinctive flycatcher-like bird endemic to the Albertine Rift Mountains of Central Africa. Males are characterized by a black mask, white supercilium, and a broad black breast band.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high-altitude montane forests of the Albertine Rift, including parts of DR Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi.
How to spot
Look for them in the mid to upper canopy of montane forests. Identify by the black mask, white eyebrow, and black breast band (males). Listen for their characteristic 'chip-chip-chip' calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its montane habitat. Active throughout the day.
Batises are known for their active foraging, flitting rapidly through the foliage to snatch insects and often fanning their tail, revealing white outer tail feathers.
