Where to spot
Himalayas east to Southeast Asia (China, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia). Inhabits montane and submontane evergreen forests.
How to spot
Listen for its soft, descending hooting calls, sometimes a single note or a series. Look for its small size, prominent ear tufts, and mottled brown plumage. Spotlighting in appropriate montane forest habitat.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, most active from dusk to midnight.
