The Nicobar Scops Owl is a small, critically endangered owl endemic to the Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal. It is a secretive inhabitant of tropical lowland forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Nicobar Islands (Great Nicobar, possibly Little Nicobar), India. Inhabits tropical lowland forests.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity and restricted island habitat. Identification relies on its characteristic scops owl features and its very precise geographic range. Listening for calls at night in appropriate forest habitat is the most likely method.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Observations are exceptionally rare.
This owl is known from very few specimens and its population size is likely very small, making it one of the rarest and most threatened owl species globally, requiring urgent conservation attention.
