Spotted
The Yellow-throated Woodpecker is a small to medium-sized species, easily identified by its bright yellow throat and greenish-barred plumage. It is a resident of tropical rainforests.
Where to spot
Found in West Africa, including countries like Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria. Inhabits lowland rainforests and mature secondary forests.
How to spot
Look for its bright yellow throat and barred underparts. Males have a red nape. Listen for its characteristic high-pitched, often repetitive, calls and soft tapping sounds as it forages.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observed year-round. It can be elusive in dense forest, so patience is key.

This woodpecker often forages in the mid-story and sub-canopy, moving agilely along branches and vines rather than just climbing large trunks.
