Where to spot
Exclusively found on Biak Island, off the coast of New Guinea. It inhabits primary and secondary lowland rainforests, often staying within the mid to upper canopy.
How to spot
Requires patience due to its preference for the forest canopy. Scan the upper branches of trees. Listen for its calls, which can be an important aid in detection, as it can be well-camouflaged despite its vibrant colors.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, generally more observable in the early morning or late afternoon. It is a resident species, present year-round.
This species has a particularly short tail relative to other kingfishers in its genus, which may be an adaptation to its dense forest habitat.
