The Philippine Dwarf Kingfisher is an exquisite and tiny kingfisher endemic to the Philippines. It is characterized by its glossy black upperparts with iridescent blue highlights, and deep rufous underparts.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Philippines, found on various islands including Luzon, Mindanao, and Leyte. Inhabits humid lowland forests, typically near small streams or damp areas.
How to spot
Look for it perched quietly in the dark undergrowth of the forest, often near water. Its small size and dark upperparts make it challenging to spot, but a patient search might reveal it. Listen for its high-pitched 'tseet' calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours. Best observed in the mornings and late afternoons.
This species has a distinctive dark, almost black, upper body, which sets it apart from many other brightly colored dwarf kingfishers in the region.
