Where to spot
Widespread from India and Sri Lanka east through Southeast Asia to Indonesia. Inhabits clear, slow-moving streams, rivers, ponds, and mangroves, typically in forested areas.
How to spot
Look for its brilliant colors as it perches low on branches or reeds near water, waiting for prey. Its rapid, direct flight along watercourses is also characteristic. Listen for its sharp 'chick' or 'chip' calls.
