Spotted
The Black-billed Cuckoo-Dove is a distinctive, long-tailed pigeon native to New Guinea and parts of the Bismarck Archipelago. It is characterized by its iridescent neck plumage and, as its name suggests, a dark bill.
Where to spot
Found throughout mainland New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and some surrounding islands. Inhabits montane and hill forests, often at higher elevations, but also some lowland areas and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for its long tail, reddish-brown plumage with a prominent iridescent neck patch, and notably a dark or blackish bill. Listen for its high-pitched 'woo-woo' or 'oo-oo-oo' call, which is distinctive from other cuckoo-doves.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often foraging for fruits in the forest canopy. More easily detected by its distinct calls, which can carry through dense forest.

The iridescent sheen on its neck feathers can change color from pinkish-purple to green depending on the angle of light, creating a beautiful and subtle display that aids in identification.
