Spotted
The Pied Imperial-Pigeon is a stunning and highly recognizable imperial pigeon, known for its striking pure white plumage contrasting with black primary flight feathers. It is widespread across Southeast Asia and Australasia.
Where to spot
Widely distributed from Myanmar and Southeast Asia through Indonesia, New Guinea, and northern Australia. It inhabits coastal forests, mangroves, offshore islands, and sometimes inland forests near water.
How to spot
Its unmistakable white body and black wingtips make it easy to identify, even from a distance. Look for it flying in flocks or perched in large trees, often on islands. Its calls are deep, booming 'woos' or 'coos' that can carry over long distances.
When to spot
Active during the day, often seen in large, conspicuous flocks flying between feeding and roosting sites. Roosting islands can hold thousands of birds overnight, making dawn and dusk particularly spectacular.

Pied Imperial-Pigeons are highly nomadic, undertaking significant seasonal movements in large flocks to track fruiting cycles across their vast range, often congregating in thousands on offshore islands to roost.
