Spotted
The Pale-rumped Swift is a South American swift species, distinguished by its dark body and a contrasting pale rump patch, which is often whitish. It is a highly aerial bird, spending much of its life in flight, foraging for insects.
Where to spot
Found in western South America, primarily in the Amazon basin and adjacent foothills of the Andes, across countries like Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. It inhabits lowland rainforests and forest edges, often near rivers.
How to spot
Identify by its dark body and the prominent pale rump patch, which is its most distinctive field mark. Observe its rapid, often high-flying and erratic flight. Listen for its high-pitched, chattering calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, with peak foraging in the early morning and late afternoon. As a resident species in its tropical range, it can be observed throughout the year.
Despite its name, the paleness of the rump can vary, sometimes appearing more greyish depending on light conditions and individual variation, requiring careful observation.
