Widespread across New Guinea and numerous satellite islands, inhabiting lowland and hill forests, as well as disturbed woodlands and gardens.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic hooting calls after dark. Spotting it requires patient searching with a spotlight in the dense tropical vegetation.
When to spot
Nocturnal. Best observed by listening for its calls during the night, particularly at dusk and dawn.
This owl's vocalizations are a prominent sound of the New Guinean jungle, often heard echoing through the dense canopy after dark.
