Spotted
The Palm Cockatoo is a very large, magnificent black cockatoo native to New Guinea and parts of Australia, recognized by its enormous beak, prominent crest, and bare red cheek patches.
Where to spot
Rainforests, monsoon forests, and woodlands in New Guinea, Cape York Peninsula (Australia), and some surrounding islands.
How to spot
Look for its immense size, entirely black plumage, huge bill, and bare red facial skin that changes color with excitement. Listen for its loud, far-carrying whistles and screeches. Try to spot them high in the canopy or flying over forest.
When to spot
Active during the day. Observable year-round, but often shy and elusive in dense forest. Best found by listening for their calls or drumming.
