Where to spot
Breeds across eastern Siberia, Korea, and northern Japan. It migrates south to winter in southern Japan, southern China, and parts of Southeast Asia, inhabiting woodlands, forests, gardens, and parks.
How to spot
Look for its plain brown plumage and pale underside. It frequently forages on the ground, often in leaf litter. Listen for its distinctive and often loud song, especially at dawn and dusk.
When to spot
Best observed during its breeding season (spring to early summer) in northern regions, or during migration (spring/autumn) and winter (late autumn to early spring) in its southern range.

Despite its 'pale' name, its most striking feature is often its loud, fluty song, which can be surprisingly complex for a seemingly drab bird.
