Where to spot
Humid evergreen forests, particularly in ravines and along streams, in southeastern Africa (e.g., South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique).
How to spot
Look on the forest floor or low perches in dense, moist forests. Its rufous head and spotted flanks are good identifiers. Listen for its clear, melodious song.

Year-round resident. Most vocal during the breeding season (spring/summer). Active early morning and late afternoon.
